Cà Nani

Cà Nani Small Boutique Hotel occupies an old agricultural property, the origins of which date back to the 1600s. The current building, erected in the early 1900s over the original structure, was one of the first in the town. In fact, together with the church, it formed the first nucleus of the picturesque village of Casima, some 600 m a.s.l. at the foot of Monte Generoso. In 2022, the Guastalla family bought the property from the historic Travella family, who had looked after it for generations. Today, Cà Nani represents a blend of history and modern elegance, designed to offer its guests a unique experience.

History

At 618 m a.s.l., the municipality of Casima and hamlet of Castel San Pietro is a settlement on the right bank of the River Breggia. This picturesque village, nestled in the nature of the Muggio Valley, between Monte Generoso, Lake Lugano and Lake Como, affords a spectacular view of the valley.
Probably founded during the Middle Ages and already mentioned in 1507, the settlement depended on Cabbio until it became an autonomous municipality in 1805. Moreover, the religious separation between the two communities had already taken place in 1788, with the creation of the parish of Casima.
Rural activities such as sheep and goat farming (the only one still practised today), the cultivation of potatoes and cereals in the cleared plots, as well as the production of wood and charcoal for export, were the mainstays of the town’s fragile economy. However, combined with periodic emigrations to the Americas from the mid-19th century onwards, these circumstances led to a drastic decline in the population, which fell to just 34 in 1980.
Casima is thus an example of how the inhabitants of the right bank, with Monte and Campora, depended on those of the left bank connected by an ancient network of paths on the valley floor.
